In the beginning
Our grand-grand father Mr. Sidi Ali Megildi(1870-1934) was known in the thousand-year-old city of fez as one of the most respected tanners and dealers. The famous traditional tannery of fez is a living witness of, perhaps, the last great medieval city on earth.
The tannery survival through the centuries is due to a state-of-the-art subterranean water and sewage system installed since the 13th century. This system is considered by most observes as an incredible feat of hydro-engineering still working to this day in full working order.
Mr. megildi owned several shops, considered as small manufacturing units, where leather and leather related goods were manufactured and sold. The production encompassed several goods; from traditional Shoes to saddlery.
Some of these manufacturing units are still operating to this day. They are specialised in the manufacture of hand crafted items made out of cow, sheep, goat and camel skins.
After Mr. Megildi’s death, his children resolved to continue their father work and legacy. By all accounts, they were remarkable men in their trade, and in time, like their father, were to accrue a reputation verging on the excellent. The torch of craftsmanship in leather tanning has been passing from father to son ever since.
Time went by and each generation has contributed somehow to the preservation of this noble trade as well as to its development. The shift from the traditional method of tanning to the new one has been a necessity more than a choice in order to meet the ever-changing market demands. Thus the family invested in high-tech machinery and qualified workmanship.
Since the introduction of machinery and the use of chrome in the tanning of leather, the Megildi’s family has been evolving and embrassing the new technology. However, we still process some of our orders in the old tannery according to the wishes and requirements of some of our clients who prefer the vegetable tanned leather for its flexibility as well as its nostalgic natural look, touch and smell
More than a century later
In 2003, two grand-grand sons of Mr. Ali Megildi decided to venture internationally and market the family product abroad. IRONECA was created as an independent firm for the purpose of marketing and managing the exports of the family treasure (leather and leather related goods) as well as other non competing manufacturers’ products. The company operates as an external commercial branch for two tanneries with a production capacity exceeding 80.000 s q feet of finished leather per day, and two shoe factories one of which is specialised in the manufacture of safety work Shoes that meets the international standards for safety at different work environments.
Since its creation, IRONECA has been growing at a satisfactory rate. Just like our ancestors, we intend to mark our history page with remarkable achievements so that our off-springs can be proud of us just like we are proud of our heritage.
